Girls in Tech (GIT) is a global non-profit focused on the engagement, education and empowerment of girls and women who are passionate about technology. Adriana Gascoigne founded GIT in 2007 to create a support framework to help women advance their careers in STEM fields.
Today, GIT aims to accelerate the growth of innovative women entering into the high-tech industry and building startups. We achieve this through the creation of proprietary, innovative programming and strategic global partnerships.
With headquarters in San Francisco and more than 50,000 members located around the globe, GIT relies on volunteer efforts to lead each of the 60 local chapters. Programming and events vary by chapter based on local interests and needs.
GIT is not just for professional women. We exist for anyone with an interest in technology, startups and providing women with a platform for growth. But we operate with the spirit of the girl within all of us—fearless, lively and determined.
Increasing the technical and entrepreneurial capacity to inspire women to innovate, share wisdom, and have a voice within the industry
Utilizing the power of technology to bring women together to shape their future and democratize the world
Facilitating learning and skillbuilding through advanced curriculum and programming within the STEM fields
Girls in Tech Foundation/Girls in Tech India is an official NGO in India incorporated and functioning as per the rules of Indian Non Governmental Organization (NGO).
It exists “to support and raise the visibility of women in STEM, entrepreneurship and innovation.”
Primary advocacy of the NGO is it has special focus on women towards the engagement, education and empowerment in technology and entrepreneurship with a focus on the promotion, growth and success of entrepreneurial and innovative women in the areas including but not limited to science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, entrepreneurship.
In India, though, with the number of women in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) increasing, the women in workforce in STEM and entrepreneurship still continues to remain less. The statistics in India can be found to the right.
Thus, Girls in Tech India is not just a requirement but a necessity. What is most important to Girls in Tech India, is to localize the mission in a very effective and an impactful manner and to provide the best of the resources available at Girls in Tech such as resources and events combined with expertise to help members further their educational and professional aspirations. The idea is to provide right kind of exposure, mentorship, and network, enhance skills and knowledge through a range of national and international resource pool, programs, workshops and opportunities to connect and showcase talent.
From the past one year, Girls in Tech India has been doing events and providing best of resources available before launching to analyze how to localize the mission in India. All of the events were a huge success with amazing national and international partners.
Several things of focus were identified during establishment of NGO such as the importance of mentors, industry-institutes, providing an exposure after coming out of colleges, helping returning mothers find a path again in their career, providing women entrepreneurs a platform etc.
NGO plans to engage 1000 girls/women every year.
